Habits are the most important thing for athletes. You
can’t be great on willpower alone. It’s not sustainable.
Becoming the best athlete you can be takes time, and
you need as little friction as possible between you and
your goal. That’s why habits matter so much. Once
they’re ingrained, you don’t have to consciously think
about doing them. You just do them. And that’s what
makes them sustainable over the long run.
But there’s a dangerous side too. The same applies to
your bad habits, and the ones you’ve been repeating for
years are the hardest to break. So you need patience.
At the start, building new habits and getting rid of
old ones will be tough.
It’s like a plane on takeoff. Most of the fuel is used
just getting off the ground. The hardest part is
starting and sticking with it through that early stretch.
